I have had guineas for years. They do like to roam a bit more than the chickens. When they first arrive in your coop, keep them locked in for 4-6 weeks to get them used to calling that place "home". Keep a close eye on them for a while after they are let out to free range and when they go somewhere they should not, you can herd them back to where they should be. Takes a few of those "round ups" but pretty soon they stay away from the restricted area. Mine do get out on the road once in awhile but it only takes me walking toward them and they head right back for their own area. As far as tick control, not sure as we have always had both guineas and chickens but all of those birds love to get out in the grass and eat bugs.
