Central Missouri
You might consider that in furrow or two by two arent giving yield increases because the rest of your system is also limiting yield thus you wont get higher yields until you plug the lowest stave in the barrel. Then the next lowest and so on. It has been our experience that plugging the first hole gives small results, second hole a bit more, and so on until you hit a cumulative affect and then all of the sudden our crop looks alot healthier than 5 years ago.
Its not easy and if you are on that road it wont be inexpensive because your out of pocket cost of production will go up. It also involves disease mitigation and for us, because we almost always have dry spells, ethylene reduction.
We moved forward by tissue testing weekly, through the total acre program, and adding/adjusting nutrients, timing, and disease control. It hasnt been easy or cheap but it has made us much better farmers.
The other thing to remember, especially if you are on less forgiving soils like we are, that it can be different nutrients, diseases, or weather that will be limiting so you have to build a system that mitigates all of those and work that system every year.
Things to consider are drainage, nutrient availability by plant timing needs, disease control. Some nutrients are easier than others to raise the amount that gets into the plant. In general the mobile nutrients are easier to help than the immobile ones.
