There a paint prep chemical that you can get from any good paint store that will etch it. I had new painted down spouts on my house and of course they were the wrong color for the house when we repainted it. Went to paint store and told the guy and he handed me a quart can of etcher and said to take a rag and rub on and when we got around to painting it was ready to be painted, very easy to do. That can was more than enough and the paint never came off. We painted the down spouts the same color as our house.
