I was looking into using a switch like what you are talking about for something else. I found that for what I was doing, I needed a proportional switch. An 8-way switch is still just on or off, and so I could just use the 4-way switch. Maybe you knew that, I didn't when I started looking into it. Any easy source for a four-way is the thumb switch used for folding the booms on a case sprayer.
