Some wild guesses from a distance:
The hard drive died completely. This will be bad, as recovering data will cost more than you want to pay.
The hard drive got some bad data on it where it is supposed to wake up your computer. Someone can easily bypass this by booting up from a little thumb drive and then looking at the info on the drive, or taking out the hard drive and cabling it in as a second drive to a different computer.
It’s possible some cable or other hardware piece of the laptop failed, making it appear the hard drive is bad. The thumb drive boot won’t work then, but placing the drive itself onto another computer would.
One can often tell by the sounds or actions of the computer as you turn it on, if the hard drive is functioning or quiet, etc, as to which is going on.
