Alberta, Canada
Just a thought, don't have a lot of experience with it, but would it have something to do with the chamber restrictors [wedges?] you have installed?

I got the impression that running bale skiis / chamber stops "allowed" you to run lower chamber pressure, making it "easier" on the baler, with uniform density / length.

Don't have the restrictors, but looking at it to improve uniform bale lengths (still haven't gotten that e-mail from you with pictures of the chamber things you installed).

I'm usually running at 285 load, averaging 2,000psi, and averaging 40 flakes in a 96" bale. And my bales are TIGHT, no matter the crop, even rotary straw, even 67% moisture barley silage.
