Driving many different trucks I have learned a few tricks. Some you may know some you might not know. First crack the window closest to the exhaust. Listen to what the motor is telling you on how hard it is working. If it is under heavy load it is not time to shift yet. When you shift keep in mind every truck has a neutral in between each gear. If you want to shift at a low rpm then spend very little time with the shifter in between gears. At a higher rpm you can pause a little longer. Regardless make a short pause in neutral.

Also if you picture the shift pattern as a slot and when you go to shift it may make a difference which side of the slot you are closest to whether it is the left or right. This last trick may seem strange, but try it out. Grab the cold hard steel part of the shifter. Not the cute ergonomic plastic thing at the top. Grab it as low down as your arm will reach and it will let you feel when it slides into gear the easiest with no raking of the gears. Best of luck.
