The only way I have seen that work was for first pick up the bale and set it on something so you can spear it near the bottom.  It does not work to pick them up on the ground because the lower part of the frame hits the ground.  Great concept, but does not afford much higher lift height since most of the time when I spear a bale the frame is less than 4" off the ground.
