We just use excavator with smooth bucket so you can see the trench when digging. Depending on soil types, generally pretty easy to see. If you have risers as a reference, I would look at the terrain and take a guess where it looks like it would go and dig crossways looking for the difference in dirt from trencher. A lot if times even if the soil colors don't change much as you go down, you can still see that the trench dirt is "looser" even after 50+ years. Flag where you find it and move down a couple hundred feet at a time. It works for us and is usually pretty quick. I'm sure the locators work well but we've always just either probed it all the way or used excavator.
