Subject: Ford pickup PCM swap

Mountain West

One of my 1996 Ford 3/4 tons suddenly runs badly, a kind of full-rich limp home mode; can't get the OBD1 to scan.  We've swapped all the relevant sensors from another "96, but no change.  Fuel pump and pressure are okay.

I suspect the PCM is bad.  The pickups have different part numbers on their PCMs, but I'm wondering how critical that is for this age of pickup:  the computers are much more basic than today's; not VIN critical; etc.

I thought I would ask here if anyone has had experience swapping different numbered boxes on this vintage.
