Subject: Cover crop with uncertainty of chemical availability next year.

East Central Ia
We are heavy into cover crops. We have been doing them for a handful of years and feel we have a good grasp on how to make this system work on our farm.

That being said… a glyphosate pass in the spring to terminate the rye is an integral part of our process.

Not sure if we should be rethinking this process this fall with the uncertainty of chemical availability or cost.

Worst case scenario is we would need to mechanically terminate with the soil finisher. I don’t like this option but not sure it a deal breaker.

I feel we would loose part of the erosion control benefit from tillage pass until crop is large enough to anchor the soil again.

But I still feel we would gain the benefit for nutrients scavenging, especially on our fall applied hog manure acres.

This uncertainty sure it makes it hard to plan, and it seems like plans are needing to be made further and further into the future and they still might blow up on you!
