It is to carry more weight on the front axle, increased floatation in the field also, but if i can be perfectly honest... I just LOVE the way they look. Most of your heavy haul trucks (with fifth wheels) have them, but most of them also have a third rear axle that lifts up. That is also usually the only place you see a wide hood option. Radiator is HUGE.
