There are many strains of influenza. A determination is made months in advance as to which are most likely and that year's vaccine is made accordingly.
If the vaccine covers strains A,D, G, and H (made these up) and you just recovered from C, then the vaccine will help protect you from the common strains going around. Otherwise, you will be susceptible to getting the flu all over again.
