Not so much NW but NC. Sugar load island/mountain near Fairfield Bay is pretty cool. Its a lake that was formed after they dammed up in the 50s or 60s (dont remember) There are still towns below the water, you can take a ferry out to the island and see the trees completely intact below water where they are preserved but rotted off above water. Pretty easy hike to the top. Also there is a military base like 20 minutes away so we got spoiled and 3 big military jets flew down the lake and around the island and back.
