Take Highway 2 west out of Grand Island.  You can take it all the way across the state if you wish.  It is one of the most beautiful stretches of road I've ever been on.  Or you can go North on 183 when you get to Thedford and head up towards Valentine and then go west on Highway 20.  I'd consider this route more "adventurous."
