East Central SD | There are several on the face, they are monitors and there are wires attached to the boxes. I guess they are very sensitive and measure any movement as the carving expands and contracts from temperature changes. I believe it also helps them to be aware if a crack starts so they can fill and seal before water gets in and freezes which could damage the carving. They are a little distracting but are only visible when you are at the top and not from the typical distance of the visitor center. | |
