CMPK is sort of a shotgun type treatment that covers the common metabolic problems. There are straight calcium solutions, and straight dextrose for acetonemia, but most of the time a CMPK IV or gel tube will have what the cow needs.
That's an excellent point and I am glad you made it to add some clarity. I wanted to reply to JDSWMO's reply because in one sense he was correct but in another sense he wasn't, and I didn't want him getting mad at me!!! Your using the phrase, "sort of a shotgun type treatment" hit the nail right on the head! I'm pretty sure even those concoctions have various ratios of the minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium) for the discerning vets who may have good idea which metabolic problem they are dealing with at treatment time.....
(And in dairy herds I think a fair amount of energy goes into the dry cow ration to get the cows own metabolic pathways set up to deal with the hypocalcemia induced by sudden and large volumes of lactation....)
