The depth of the pump has nothing to do with the head. The height from the water level to the pumped outlet is the head. If you have a 300' drilled well, with the pump at 280' and water at 50', then the head is 50'(plus any drawdown and additional pressure on top). I know GPS knows that, but that's not what he wrote.
