It's not too hard to keep it from freezing if that's the goal. It would have to be sealed and insulated over the top and it won't freeze. The deeper the pit, the more heat will transfer to the water to keep from freezing. Having a deeper pit won't affect the pumping head, but it won't affect the pump cycles either because you don't want to pump to the bottom of the pit, you want the active part between the pump turning on and off to have the largest surface area and shortest height for the lowest pumping pressure and longest pump cycles.
