Subject: John Deere 8300 guidance

Northwest Illinois
I am planning to purchase a John Deere 8300 in the near future. I would like to add guidance and potentially section control to the tractor. Currently use Trimble 750 and ez-steer with centerpoint RTX. I would like to go to integrated John Deere equipment in the 8300, like most people trying to keep the cost down, what recommendations would those familiar with John Deere systems make for used equipment. Currently used just for planting but eventually want to add spraying and possibly strip-till. thanks

Joe

Midwest

I doubt it's AT ready unless a previous owner added the harnessing and hydraulics already.

But for used stuff, I agree on the receiver and display. You'll likely need to buy new greenstar ready harness and integrated hyd steering stuff if you buy a stock tractor.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

I'm just going to throw this out there:

If you are leaning towards integrated steering, because you are tired of the noise and clunking of an older Ez-steer unit (on steering wheel); you shouldn't compare that older design to the "new stuff" .

I've just installed 2 Ag Leader Steadysteer systems, and used the JD8410 SteadySteer for 2 days replanting soybeans (Hailed out) and you can't even hardly hear the MDU (Motor Drive Unit) over the engine noise at 1750 rpms. ( AND I don't listen to the radio; so that wasn't muffling any noise, either)

I was very impressed, on very low noise levels, and how well it steered, even using WAAS and an older GPS1600 reciever (but it is 10 Hz capable = minimum necessary for SteadySteer)

Note: used to have an older Ez-steer (came with the used JD8410 tractor) so I know the additional noise they can create.

If you want to go the AgLeader route, Steady Steer is pretty nice. However, you want Section Control for a Deere planter I assume, then stay away from AgLeader. It will only add headaches later. A used Deere display with all needed activations, buying a steering valve block and a Starfire receiver can run upward to $20,000, if you can even find those items right now.

I would personally suggest you start with a 4240 display with AutoTrac unlock for $5,500, an ATU300 for about $2000 and get on a list for a receiver, $4000. You can add the section control subscription later for $850/yr or buy a different older display.

I'm curious why you would say this. I very much pro Ag Leader and have used their section control on the last two planters, liquid control on sprayers and planters etc. I use SteerCommand on two of my tractors and Steer Command Z2 on the planting tractor. I've been happy with the interaction and results.

If it has a Deere controller, Deere steering valve and Deere wiring, then why would I want to buy any AgLeader unless the rest of my entire farm is AgL?
Not bashing AgL, just stating a "what I would do if presented this situation."

I doubt it has a Deere Steering valve but that's just my opinion.

Trimble autopilot would steer that tractor really well! I would look for a FmX system. It will be very similar to the 750 you are already using, just bigger. I would not be surprised if you you couldn't get into that cheaper than a Deer system, especially on a tractor that needs valve and harnessing.
