Subject: RE: Millet

SW Nebraska Panhandle

Plant hay millet every year along with winter triticale and sometimes spring oats.  Spread the risk.  Hay millet has been very good and cattle eat it very well.  They have no idea what alfalfa tastes like.  The hay they like the best is triticale when it is put up at boot stage and put up properly.  We had pretty good triticale this year but the hay millet did not yeild well at all (hardly any rain here this summer).  Dryland millet only yielded about 1/2 Ton.  If hay millet gets just a little rain it can really yield well and quality is good (12-15% CP).  We have not tested our hay millet yet this year.  If the hay millet is good that is the hay we usually feed our replacement heifers.  If not, then we feed whatever and supplement (corn and peas).

We usually plant Golden German. Seems to have more leaves.
