NW IA | I don't know if it has been mentioned, but make sure the prior years herbicide doesn't doom your plan before the oats are planted.
Horsepower oats were good here this year, but there should be good extension information on varieties for your area.
I just use 60 units of N and have VH levels of P and K due to manure history. NO manure on a field prior to oats.
I need to do some leveling in certain areas of my farm or I would consider no-tilling oats. We also tend to seed oats where stalks have been removed for bedding.
IMHO if you get anywhere near average or above rainfall you can't go wrong by planting a companion crop, in my case Nitrogen alfalfa and red clover (From Albert Lea Seed, about 2-1).
We started out quite dry but had adequate and timely rain after the 5th of July, and we got a good cutting of hay to end the season along with the added N. I will leave this field go for one year before terminating in the spring of '23 to no-till corn without purchased N.
Can't offer much re marketing. We raise oats mainly for calf hut bedding and a place to haul manure. The oats that aren't fed are sold to my neighbor who cleans them and sells them for seed.
