Would have been interesting to know if you returned it and the second one was the same.
Every 1/4" ratchet I owned has been less then impressive. Snap-on, Craftsman, Mac. None of them seem to have a decent mechanism. And NO, I don't use them as a 1/2" ratchet either.
The "best" one i have is a Gearwrench, it seems to be holding up well.
