I think the study was not looking at mortality and thus considered all of the deaths irrelevant. They were looking for other negative outcomes of the vaccine and felt they did not find enough to warrant concern.
I think death should be considered a pretty big side effect and raw numbers paint a different picture than what the study concludes. The study did not find any deaths to be directly caused by the vaccine.

From Dose 1 through the March 13, 2021 data cutoff date, there were a total of 38 deaths, 21 in the COMIRNATY group and 17 in the placebo group. None of the deaths were considered related to vaccination.
