I had become certain that very high Mg levels in combination with thin stems resulted in the lodging but the amount of stems broke at the base was still puzzling.

Soybean stem borer!

Missed a few clues. When I split stems the symptoms looked similar to BSR except that much of the pith was gone. Is on the edge of the field where I had lots of cockleburs in 2020 until pulling by hand early fall. The cocklebur plants had branches which broke off easily and had been hollowed out. Didn't realize that soybeans/cockleburs/giant ragweed are all hosts for the same bug. They migrate down to the base of the soybean plant late summer and cause the lodging/stem breakage which shows up later and in this case rather suddenly. Mystery solved!
