Subject: Cover Crop on 15" rows

I was wondering if anyone has planted cover crops on 15" rows? I didn't know if that was a bad idea getting spread out to far or if it would work. Looking at some air seeders seems like a lot of them are on 15"

We plant cover crop with a Hiniker air seeder that was set for 15" rows and moved them together to have 2 rows 10" apart then a 20" gap that we plant into. It all depends on your goals.
I wanted to be able to plant corn into cereal rye without worrying about yield reduction when I terminated right after planting. I wanted the cover crop to get more growth in the spring before termination.

We have the same setup as Farmnsew. We striptill in the 20 inch gap. Planted with our 1790 15" planter before that, but I like the wider spacing the Hiniker gives us. I'm not however in love with the Hiniker units.

I also am going to plant my covers with a hiniker 4836 on 10” twin row spacing (so 2 10 inch rows with 20 inch open to plant into). Kind of concerned if I was making right decision or not but now I feel pretty good about it.

As for 15” rows did it las year with our 1990 and really liked it and my brother is going to take that route this year. I wanted a little more room in case I want to make a strip between the rye rows. If you have good rtk guidance 15s will work just fine.

Hiniker leave a lot to be desired but are cheap and it doesn’t take much for rye. I didn’t like spreading it and running the 1990 was expensive. Hiniker was so cheap I bought one and a spare.

Plant mine with a 1790 on 15” centers. Want to move rows to 20” centers to be able plant beans between wheat in spring.

I do it with a 1990CCS. Come back in the spring and plant beans in between the cover crop rows with the same machine. Plant covers at an angle in bean stubble then plant corn straight for the field (at an angle to the covers). I figure I get a lot of the cover crop benefits with less risk to the cash crop that follows. Used to plant real heavy on 10” rows like the govt program calls for and had too much problems with the cash crop following.
