More corn silage in ration supplemented with protien means more of the corn for grain moves off farm? Corn taken for silage does not equal no production, just means not figured into yield. Actually cuts demand?
I can't speak for other places, but it does not work that way 'here'.
What happens is the worst corn goes into silage. This is generally the dryland acres that are suffering heavily, and hail damaged crops. Grain silage from corn yielding 20 BPA has less grain in it than silage from 150 BPA corn, requiring more corn to supplement the ration.
With reduced alfalfa yields, things like straw and cornstalks will be used for 'bulk' (cattle need a certain amount of bulk in their ration) supplemented with protein. The amount of corn silage will probably not change a whole lot, but it will take more acres of it, to get the same amount. They may use a bit more of it, because it won't bee too 'hot' with grain. If anything, additional corn may (or may not) be fed to make up for the lack of grain in the silage (depending on how the silage tests).
While it is possible the amount of corn fed might go down overall, if anything it will go up, 'here'. |
