Subject: RE: organic: cover crop between row crops?

Kettle Moraine, WI
I have been wondering about trying the new seeding alfalfa with corn as companion crop in the organic system. (Plant corn and then plant new seeding over top of it) Conventional system use RR corn and RR alfalfa to make it work. Adapting to organic is my question mark. Thinking plant corn deep, drag it twice, roll, airflow alfalfa, and roll. If wait until late May planting the corn can be up in 5 days. The corn can be dragged or tine weeded preplant often and no issues rolling corn when it is inch or 2 tall. Alfalfa dropped in clean seedbed with emerged corn, and ready to go. No weed control option beyond flaming or finger weeding in row as you mentioned. Won't be perfect but would be a legume crop within the corn to offer future benefits and solid seeding.
