Roanoke, IN | Still experimenting, but my goal is the oxymoron of a diverse monocrop. 1 sellable high demand crop (organic corn) but 15+ species growing on the farm at any 1 time. I wish I would have drilled some the day of planting, but time was short. I will definitely be moving up the timing of planting cover in the future. My dream would be 1 planting corn & cover in one pass with a drill/planter hybrid.
I feel I can give up some yield to be able to plant the $$$ crop every year vs a longer rotation with less profitable crops in between and still reap soil health benefits and have something growing almost year-round. I believe Dr. Gruver's research has shown 10-20% lag in 60 vs 30 inch. It is easy to lose that in a bad weather year when weed control operations get delayed. If I am going to deal with weeds, I want to choose my weeds and have it be part of my overall strategy and system.
Just my ramblings and am only on my 2nd year. I plan to run it until the wheels fall off and then re-evaluate the potential feasibility on a larger farm scale.
