Subject: RE: organic: cover crop between row crops?

southern MN
J gruver (I’m really bad with names, I know that’s not quite right I’m sorry) has posted many pics and threads over the last 3 years on his work with 60 inch corn rows and cover crops between. You could spend a whole day reading his research here. Would be helpful.

I don’t think you could plant the cover that early, with the corn? I think it would suck up moisture and nutrients and hurt the corn with that timing? I think knee high or later would be the right timing on normally spaced corn in a northern climate, and then you might be past the typical rain patterns, and enough shading it’s hard to establish much cover in 30 inch rows. I believe you already know and are looking for ideas on these difficulties, so I’m only stating the obvious of course.

Be careful, in a drought like we are experiencing these cover crops hurt the main crop really bad really fast. I’ve had 5-6 years of flooding wet weather, got lazy with my spring cover crop management and it really hurt my small field of cover crop corn this year. It’s an entirely different world going from too much to too little rainfall, trying to guess ahead of time with how to manage the covers is a challenge!

I’m not organic and I’m not exactly inter-seeding a cover myself, so I’m not much help, just enjoy the topic and see how it develops.
