Central PA | We have been thinking the last three weeks of how to handle intense rainfall events (2" in twenty minutes) and avoid erosion. We are seeing erosion in full canopy fields with saturated soil and intense rains (10" this july). (Sorry to break the news to those facing drought.)
That brings us to consider interplanting a quick growing cover between rows, something like annual ryegrass, maybe seeding with a drill or broadcast before planting row crop like corn, then cleaning up in the row with finger weeders or lilliston wheels. We have used ARG and red clover in corn before but seeding later after last cultivation and found it just not competitive enough under the canopy.
Does this sound feasible ?
will we see too much N and moisture taking from the corn ?
will the competition between the rows hurt yield ?
Is there a better cover that would accomplish quick ground cover without hurting the cash crop or sucking up N ? | |
