Before the internet and before travel became much easier and faster you generally married someone who lived in your area because those who lived fairly close by were the only people you ever met. In recent years the world has gotten much smaller. Now you can "meet" almost anyone from almost anywhere in the world and even people of moderate means can travel to other countries when in the past only "jet setters" could do that sort of thing.

I wish I had some information that would answer your question but, sadly, I don't.
