I am looking seriously at the LT35 Hydraulic. Considered the LT40, Adds $10,000. can. to the price though but has a few more features. Not sure if it worth the extra money.
Thanks in advance.

I run an LT40HD and like it. Woodmizer stands behind its products with very good parts availability and service. I deal with Woodmizer Maine, which is owned by a couple who also operate a mill, so I can talk to someone who knows the machine. I have never wished I had a smaller mill.

Hemlock that I bought from a few miles away. Mostly good, but all hemlock around here is prone to shake. I found a few with it, but at 325 per thousand it's worth dealing with. Our lumber prices are very high right now.

What do you do to dry the lumber? I dream of having one of those but I'm not sure exactly how to dry it or how to avoid it becoming twisted up garbage.

Just stickers and air dry for now. Someday I would like to build a kiln, but other projects have priority. Hemlock is pretty stable and usually shrinks about 4 percent, so not real hard to deal with.

Thanks Haleiwa. I am dealing with a group in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada. Same situation as they have been in the business for 22 years and also mill wood on a daily basis. They know the product.

What engine and horsepower are you running?

I repowered it with a Kohler 25. Originally it had an Onan.

There is a several month waiting list for a new mill. Logs in this area are plentiful, and log prices have not risen nearly as much as lumber.

The expensive part of the sawmill will be the blades,,buying them and paying someone else to sharpen. If you sharpen your self,,it takes time. I'm sharpening today but I run three sharpeners and 2 setters. Only way to use time wisely is to run multiple sharpeners and setters.

How many BF do you get out of one new blade?

Board feet depends on what you are sawing,,dry hardwood versus softwood,, I'd say anywhere from 300-1000 bd ft,,,Then resharpen. Might get 4-8 sharpenings from one blade. When 1 1/4" blades are sharpened down below 1 3/16" they really don't cut as well. definitely throw blades in the scrap bin at 1 1/8"
Your results may very but probably not by much.

With logs that have a fair amount of dirt or sand in the bark, 300 would be optimistic if you don't have a debarker.  The worst experience is when you strike metal the first cut with a new blade.

Haleiwa---you hit the nail on the head,,sometimes you might get 0-100 bd ft. I sharpen blades for a guy that saws alot of reclaimed timbers,,,, usually old barn wood,,,many times he makes 1-3 cuts and the blade is dull or sometimes destroyed. 1000 feet doesn't happen often but is possible. Knots, dirt, and iron definitely take life out of the blades.

What I do is paint the ends of the boards with any leftover paint to limit end checking, then I sticker them up in a connex with a household dehumidifier and big fan. I use Frigidaire dehumidifiers from Lowes or Amazon $250, big round fans from Harbor Freight, around $100.

I like to drill a hole in the floor of the connex and run the drain for the dehumidifier outside so I'm not emptying the water all the time.

Dehumidifier works much better in warmer weather, not much at all when it's cold.

Works great! I'm using Douglas Fir 1" thick for interior trim on my house and it doesn't shrink more once it is installed.

Also if sap stain is an issue spray the lumber before drying with Boracare, or much cheaper is the agricultural borate. It's just a mineral salt and stops most of the mold and also kills any beetle larvae in the wood if the logs have been down a while.
