Franklinton, LA | I am glad you and the family are planning a trip to Yellowstone. The children are old enough to really enjoy the trip. The lodging situation is not as bad as some NAT Posters indicate. However, I would suggest reserving lodging in the next few weeks.
As another poster mentioned, Cody, WY is about an hours drive from the East gate of the Park. The William Cody or Buffalo Bill Museum is worth a visit. About 5 years back they had a late afternoon gunfight in the street by the Hotel Irma. The highway northwest of Cody to the northeast gate is very scenic.
They have a few nice, reasonably priced hotels and restaurants in Gardiner, MT which is near the northwest gate.
Another poster mentioned West Yellowstone. Big Sky, MT is a few miles north of West Yellowstone. They have lodging and other activities in Big Sky. 320 Guest Ranch is a nice Dude Ranch with cabins, a restaurant and other activities. It is on the right side of the highway going to Big Sky.
Jackson Lake and Cotter Bay village is a few miles south of the park. They have several cabins, a restaurant and plenty of room for the children to walk, run and burn off some calories. This area is very convenient for touring Jackson, WY and Grand Teton National Park.
I hope you and the family enjoy the trip.
