X2. Fill the fuel tank full, that will positively eliminate any possibility of fuel draining back.

Since yours is an early model, (by your description of the fuel shutoff) pull your throttle down about halfway when you try to start it. Possibly your throttle linkage is not adjusted properly, and with the throttle lever at idle position, it may be going into fuel shutoff position???

Does it smoke at all when it just cranks and cranks???
