I would recommend planting the flowers in large planters. My mother-in-law so badly wanted a flower garden, but could not manage the weeds, and they became out of control. Finally she agreed to let me spray the entire garden (plants and weeds) and we re-mulched, then placed large pots in the garden for her to plant. As the weeds re-appeared, we could spray the garden, but her pots were fine.
This is great. What I did for my wife was build raised beds, and waist high would be even better. Stock tanks work good or even cut the top out of an IBC tote. Sift all the dirt going in with 1/2" hardware cloth to get out the rocks and amend heavy with compost and any weeds that get through the;;; heavy mulch, will be easy to pull.
Mulch mulch mulch. I always save back a dozen bales of straw and leave them out in the rain to decompose and sprout off the wheat seeds so they aren't a weed problem. She puts it on very very heavy and gets very few weeds.
We experimented with weed block fabric and it was a much bigger problem. Anything that sprouts on top of it will put roots through the fabric and you can never pull them out.
For the paths we used chips from the tree trimming guys 6-8" deep, no fabric underneath. Nice cushion to walk on and any weeds that manage to sprout on top are super easy to pull before roots get into the dirt. |
