SW Indiana | I've been building them for my wife, put posts in the ground, but our ground isn't really level. Don't think they would have to be in the ground. The big beds are 4'x16', the small beds are 4'x4'. On the long beds I added a post at 8' on the outside for support should have put screw in hooks or eyes on each side with a chain in-between like on a grain truck. They now out a little. Also learned after the first ones last year, this year when I doubled the operation we put small wire fencing (like .5"x.5" square) wire fencing in the bottom before filling with dirt. Supposed to help keep voles from coming up through the bottom into the beds.
