Maybe it's not as critical in CO as it is in the midwest. I use polyurethane sealant on joints a lot better designed and less critical than a grain bin to foundation joint. I see why the company uses the rubberized tar stuff because it's fast and cheap, but I wouldn't use that myself if you're not set up with a kettle and such.
