The best product I have used is a plastic roof cement with modified bitumen, trowel grade. For wide gaps, use some fiberglass mesh. Put a thin coat on both surfaces, embed the mesh with the trowel, apply another thin coat over the top. Drys faster and lasts a lot longer than conventional roofing plastic cement. Little more costly, but worth it in the long run. Available at roofing supply warehouses. Most lumber yards or True Values will not have it.
