5 gallons plus of ATS with chemical pre is common practice here if needs aren’t met with MESZ because MAP was used instead. AMS is all sulfate which is leachable and can have negative effects on soil PH as well. ATS is half sulfate and half elemental
S in mesz is 50/50 too. Sulfate from ams is not going to impact ph, excess ammonium might. Mesz is a premium product at premium prices. I would only use if zn levels are so low that can't be managed safely with infurrow popup. Ats with chemicals or sidedress is a good plan. Depends on situation if you need the zn and s in those quantities at those times of applications. Otherwise I can put those dollars elsewhere and pull double duty later. Here we have cool soils and zn is less/not available but needed early in corn, so I want chelated zn in furrow so it's plant available. Zn in mesz would not be plant available early here many years. I prefer Ats in sidedress which usually can replace an n inhibitor. Here map vs mesz equates to $10-20/acre more from a P requirement. Didnt mean to go off track, but alot depends on the rest of the fertility plan. I think using some gypsum and elemental s are under utilized. |
