I would put the kill wires in conduit, cost to locate fault and fix will be more than the conduit would probably be, and that locate and repair will fix that spot no guarantee that won't have another fault 2 weeks later 30ft. away from first one. BTDT. We are in the sandhills of Nebraska, pocket gophers chew an direct buried wires, have fixed and replaced a lot of them.
