Heat pumps are cheaper and more economical to run. The downside is unless it’s pretty good weather, they struggle to keep the water warm. Heat pumps could likely take a day or two (or more) to get your water to temp but keeping it at temp, they do well.

Gas heaters will heat water fast and hotter. But cost a lot more.

In a perfect world, have a heat pump sized right and a small gas heater to supplement for the colder days. I see this dual setup in AZ a lot, because snowbirds want to use the pool in the winter and in Dec and Jan, heat pumps can struggle. But the cost of using gas will be $700-800 easy if you’re not maintaining temp, because it’s pricey to bring 63 water up to 90 and so on.

My opinion is all.
