Subject: RE: Air drying corn question

SE Iowa
When and where do you market your corn? I air dry and sell to local E-plant. I have 42 foot bins also with one fan. But I never intend to get it to 15%. With no stirring device the corn at the bottom with be 12.5 to 13.5% and the top will be 16-17 every time as moisture rises when fan runs. The longer you run the fan the drier the bottom gets. My E-plant averages moisture for a contract or for the day's hauls and take corn to 15.5% with no dock so I haul from the bottom of one bin and the top of another bin to get to 15.5% for the day.. Only get docked for the initial wet loads from bin No. 1 on first hauls to get down to the drier corn to help lower bin No. 2 top wetter stuff and so on. Also the E-plant moisture dock is less then any local elevator so I don't feel to bad taking dock but getting paid for the water as it nets me more then drying myself. I start at 22-23% sometimes but prefer 20% and NEVER shut down the fans unless a prolonged rainy spell. I put some in each bin and top all later with dryer corn. When we are finishing combining corn moisture is usualy under 17% and sometimes 15%. Probably fans will have run for 20-30 days and then I freeze the corn when temps get down to 10 degrees or lower. Most corn is out by April 1st except for maybe the last 7000 bu when I need to run sweep. Keep in mind this is Iowa winter. Kansas is farther south. Sometimes I will also core bins and run back in to the top.
