If you have past production history, you should be able to get insurance through RMA no problem I would think. You just have to get an agent that knows what he’s doing and he makes a request to RMA. There are quite a few crop ins agents around Comanche and DeLeon area that could get you set up. Lots of pecans out that way. If you are interested, I could get you some agents names and numbers.

What are paper shells and natives bringing ? I used to pick natives but sold all my equipment a couple years ago. Last year I was in it, I sold my natives for around $1.20. I miss picking pecans. If I could find some more trees besides my own 500 I would like to get back in it one day.

Last year I sold 2 truckloads of natives for $0.98. they were 43% kernal don't remember but count but it was pretty big.
Desriables, 50% kernal 50 nut count brought 1.05 sold over 30,000 lbs of those.
For reference in 2016 (2017 was harvey so going with 2016) natives brought 2.05 and good improved pecans brought 3.40 to 2.75.
So on those 2 truckloads of just the natives, 88klbs, went from being worth 180k to not even 88k.
On just that lot of desriables your talking nearly 90k to 30k.
It cost me $1.40/lbs to produce a desriable pecan.
Chatter says price will be about 20% lower than last year. No way to know what they are worth other than calling the same 5 buyers who are selling to the same people.

I do retail/shell some (can't move them all) so that helps. If I could just retail all improved pecans for $2 .50/lbs I would be good.

Even retailing them is alot of labor, shelling well cost even more. And I can only hold so many in my cold storage. I would expand that but with the current economics I can't see doing it right now. Just shoe string budget for a year or two and some tough decisions will have to be made if it doesn't improve.
