Martinton,il | Big Ten announced that October 24th would be the season opener for football. It's going to get a little chilly for players by the end of the season. Fans will be snug at home. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29897305/sources-bi... .

Missouri | They haven’t been playing? Hadn’t noticed...or even missed it.

N FLA | I still can't figure out why they are wasting their time with these sports. If it's too dangerous for people to watch sports. Then take the year off. I think they think they are much more important than they really are. Not really talking about Big 10 football.... Just generalizing.

WCIL | Since there are no crowds/attendance.. could they play the games in the domed stadiums? Northern Iowa, Minnesota, Indy, Silverdone and St. Louis? Probably one out east for Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State.

ND | Its all about the money, these leagues make millions in TV rights, etc. Let them play, crowds or not, some will get sick

I think they think they are much more important than they really are. Not really talking about Big 10 football.... Just generalizing. Money...Big Money. I read that each Big 10 school would lose $75-100 Million without football.

paul the original - 9/16/2020 19:58 I wonder how much the Big 10 Network lobbied into this vote! It’s big bucks, baby. Paul The Big Ten had a revenue of $781 million in fiscal year 2019. Most of which was from the Big Ten Network and other tv contracts. The 12 schools receiving a full share of money each received $55.6 million. New comers Rutgers and Maryland got less. Big bucks indeed.

WY, OK | They realized they blinked and were going to miss out on CFP money, not to mention other bowls, easily a cool 75-100 million. Plus would hurt recruiting.

Football is a cold weather sport. Why do you need to play inside a dome? Season starts late October... goes 8 weeks.... Conference Championship in mid-December. Typical football weather/season in my opinion. No need for a dome.....

I agree, but like any farmer, or business....gotta service that debt! https://www.sportico.com/business/finance/2020/though-football-stops... edit: it's a lot like farming.... “This is a rare case where the big guys are in way worse shape than the little guys,” said Victor Matheson, a sports economics professor at College of the Holy Cross. “Quite honestly canceling football will not have a big effect on the Yales and Holy Crosses of the world. But for Ohio State, for example, this is a huge revenue impact because they count on generating huge numbers to fund their athletic department.” Edited by WTF2014 9/16/2020 23:58

NE Iowa | I’d like to know what changed so drastically in the last few weeks to lead them to change course? The big10 thought they would lead the way and the SEC, BIG10 And others would follow their lead. They were wrong!

northeast ohio | Some teams could probably just host games in their practice facilities if there are no fans. Our daughter was a student athletic trainer for the Buckeyes during the ‘15 season. Or they could schedule NDSU and play at the FargoDome. Too bad the Big10 has a policy of not scheduling NDSU any more.

Sunburst Montana | Baby Bull - 9/16/2020 21:21 I’d like to know what changed so drastically in the last few weeks to lead them to change course?! Lots of things. There were going to be some huge lawsuits for one thing. Other sports playing on right now with little trouble dealing with covid issues so far.

Texas | Baby Bull - 9/16/2020 21:21 I’d like to know what changed so drastically in the last few weeks to lead them to change course? They just wanted to cover their butts. If they marched forward and something bad happened everyone would accuse them of being careless. They have now had a chance to watch other conferences play without issue so they want to jump on board.

St. Joseph, Champaign County, IL | To be consistent with the message he’s been sending, at the least when they go out of state to play, they should have to self quarantine for 14 days before coming back into Illinois. Along with that, any teams coming into IL to play should have to self quarantine for 14 days prior to entering the state.

Central Wi | I seen a Facebook post from Madison TV station that said 42 players and coaches tested positive. Not quite sure what the plan is now but Wi seems to be a hotspot. My buddies daughter tested positive a few days ago. Got it from her roommate at Point. She's doing fine now. It almost seems like its gone from if you get it to when your gonna get it.

farmerkj - 9/17/2020 21:50 It almost seems like its gone from if you get it to when your gonna get it. IF the thing is half as contagious as they say it is, it was ALWAYS just a matter of when you're going to get it, not if. Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can't put it back in.

Alton, Ia | Kooiker - 9/17/2020 21:26 farmerkj - 9/17/2020 21:50 It almost seems like its gone from if you get it to when your gonna get it. IF the thing is half as contagious as they say it is, it was ALWAYS just a matter of when you're going to get it, not if. Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, you can't put it back in. IF, it's as contagious as they claim, AND, immunities may not last as long as other coronaviruses, THEN the best solution is to open up the gates and let it rip, up to the point of hospital/ICU capacity, and get everybody immunized quick, which we are a long, long ways from. Then the virus dies off for lack of susceptible hosts. This slow, drip by drip business we are doing now is the worst path to take. It reminds me of the scene in Band of Brothers, where Dike is supposed to lead the attack into a small town, and orders the men to slow down, and then to retreat. They were getting picked off one by one. Speirs gets sent in, directs them to do a fast and hard assault. It takes guts to charge the enemy, but that's how you win battles. Fauci, Birx, Redfield, etc. would do well to learn from this.
