I  am seeing the same here with almost 3 decades of no-till the yield gap has narrowed considerably between our better soils and our poorer soils. We don't have timber soils all of it was formed under prairie conditions. That is why i asked the question in my OP. I just wonder if variable rate would still have value under yours and mine situation?
