Subject: RE: Starfire ITC service going away

Yes we've been through all this on the forum six months ago. And probably six months before that. I learned a lot from those discussions.

No they cannot just "update" the ITCs. Not without replacing the GPS receiver circuitry itself. No software update will change the fact that the older receivers aren't physically capable of tuning the L5 frequencies. I suppose it would be reasonable for John Deere to replace the internals of the ITC at a reasonable cost, but John Deere isn't known for this sort of thing.

I wholeheartedly agree that John Deere's turning off SF1 for the old frequencies should wait until the government deadline, which is now no earlier than 2024, probably will be 2026, especially since the government deadline is the stated reason John Deere is ending the life of these ITC receivers. Eventually it will have to be done. But it's no skin off John Deere's back to keep it going as long as the GPS satellites are still working on the old frequencies. To continue harping on the government deadline as the reason for the Jan 2021 deadline is thus a bit disingenuous.

By the way, after the GPS changeover is someday complete in 2026, even WAAS won't work on the ITC receivers.
