Hazelton, Kansas 6.75 miles N of Crowbar | Had a neighbor and friend who farmed here and taught biology at Kearney State (UNK now). He did a thesis on bats in Barber Co. Kansas (where we live). We called him "The Batman". He was hosting a group of Students from Emporia State for a few days and it was decided to go tour a cave (around 120,000 bats). Neighbor askes If I would like to go along (all caves are on private land). Jumped at the chance as most ranchers don't want a steady stream of guests to babyset. Neighbor makes it very clear that there are viruses in the guano/bat saliva that can kill you. Then he grinned and said but I doubt you will have any trouble as you have cleaned out enough chicken houses, mice nests and pigeon **** in your life to be immune. As we drove out to the cave he related a story about a couple of grad students who decided to go into business selling bat guano. A couple of their elderly customers developed severe colds and died. So I have long wondered as we shift to such a small percentage of us that actually "got poo on us" how resilient we really are. Just this morning I pulled the screw out of an old auger and the wind blew a good dose of dried mice poo/urine in my face. We have deer mice here and they carry hantavirus. Not dead yet.
