Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If they say you don't owe them anything, you don't. It is really easy enough to remember that next time they need a little help. If you feel like you need to pay them (and you are going to charge them for some small thing in the future), then you better pay them. If it starts getting too one sided, you can be sure your neighbors won't offer that kind of thing up in the future. That is how it is done around here, at least.

Voluntarily helping others has some major psychological health benefits (involuntary helping of others has the opposite effect), even more so when the parties being helped realize this and the 'pay it forward' concept is carried on. A basic foundation of human civilization.
