NW IL | If I'm reading it right, you are thinking of not harvesting the corn and are thinking of planting wheat right into the standing corn?
Potential experiment to try if you don't need to let the corn stand for insurance...
What if you planted a legume that does well in dryer conditions, say cowpeas, maybe mix in some soybeans, maybe some sunflowers for color and taproot, maybe mung beans, then plant your wheat green into that this fall. Up north that would winterkill and you'd be set but maybe down there you'd need to hit it with some spray. It would help hold or build N and break up the rotation between corn and wheat. I did wheat into standing forage sorghum last fall and it's looking good right now! Just a wild idea.
If you had the cattle they'd graze great on cowpeas in corn!
Hope you can catch some rain soon! We've got a family friend that farms down near Hillsboro, and grandma lives in Newton. Beautiful country you've got out there near Emporia! | |
